Help to Buy in York

Local Property Guide

Browse Categories

The Help to Buy Scheme has now closed to new applications. Builders may be offering shared equity and other promotions, but these are not backed by the Government, as Help to Buy was.

For first time buyers, the biggest hurdle to overcome when buying a house is often the large deposit that’s needed. That’s why the government has introduced the Help to Buy scheme. It’s designed to help more people get on the property ladder and achieve their dream of home ownership.

The Help to Buy scheme allows you to take out an equity loan from the government of 15% of the property value. That means you need to save a deposit of just 5% and you’ll only need an 80% mortgage in total.

There is a wide range of Help to Buy properties in York. We’ve outlined everything you need to know about each area below, to help you make your decision about where to buy your new home.

Central York

Buying a house in central York means you’re right in the heart of the action, with beautiful buildings, a rich history, good schools and transport links: this compact city really has it all! Take a look at the Help to Buy properties in York, perfect for both first and second-time buyers.

North West

You’ll find plenty of pretty villages and market towns north-west of York, popular with young families looking to settle down in the countryside. Upper Poppleton and Nether Poppleton are just two of the sought-after villages in this area, both with regular transport links to York.

South East

The area south-east of York includes the charming towns of the East Riding of Yorkshire, including the bustling market town of Beverley; Howden, which lies roughly 16 miles southeast of York; and the quaint rural town of Market Weighton, around 20 miles from both York and Hull.

South West

There are plenty of attractive towns and villages southwest of York, some which act as suburbs of the city, and some which are further afield – perfect for those who enjoy more rural living. The small village of Bishopthorpe, located just 3 miles south of the city, and the even smaller village of Askham Richard, 6.5 miles southwest of York, are both prime locations for families looking to settle down in the countryside, but still with easy access to city amenities.
