The Help to Buy Scheme has now closed to new applications. Builders may be offering shared equity and other promotions, but these are not backed by the Government, as Help to Buy was.
For prospective buyers, saving enough money for a deposit can make getting on the property ladder seem like an impossible dream. Luckily, the government’s Help to Buy scheme has made it easier to take the first steps towards home ownership, with as little as 5% deposit. The Help to Buy (Scotland) scheme, your mortgage lender will require you to contribute a deposit of around 5%, with your mortgage and deposit covering a combined minimum of 85% of the total purchase price. The government will then contribute a 15% equity loan, making up the total property price.
The Help to Buy (Scotland) scheme is open to both first time buyers, and existing homeowners, who wish to buy a new build home from a participating home builder. The house must be your only residence, and you’re not allowed to own or part-own any other residential property as part of the scheme.
